The AIHV is an international organization dedicated to advancing knowledge of glass—its uses, history, and aesthetic qualities—from antiquity to the present day. A congress is held every three years, featuring research papers, special exhibitions, and visits to museums, galleries, and private collections. These meetings also provide an enjoyable opportunity to meet fellow enthusiasts. The before last congress (No. 22) took place in Lisbon in September 2021 and was highly successful, although all lectures were delivered via Zoom owing to COVID-19. Previous congresses have taken place in cities including Berlin, Damascus, London, Prague, Nancy, Madrid, Basel, Vienna, Amsterdam, Venice, Milan, New York, Corning, Antwerp, Thessaloniki, Piran, Freiburg, and Istanbul. A congress planned for Jerusalem in September 2024 was cancelled because of the situation in the Middle East. Instead, the 23rd congress took place in Mainz in September 2025. The next one will be organized in Marseille in September 2027. The Association is governed by statutes under Dutch law. The official languages are English, German, and French, and papers may be presented in any of these and subsequently published in the Annals.
